As we grow older, our metabolism slows down and we burn fewer calories than we used to. Over time, layers of fat build up over the stomach, which results in what we jokingly refer to as a “beer gut”. A beer gut doesn’t happen overnight, and it can’t be gotten rid of over night. It would be nice if there was a magic pill, or a certain food you could eat that will take away a beer gut in a matter of days. If such things existed, there would be no beer guts in the world.

You might now be thinking I am going to preach to you about proper diet and exercise. Yes, these things are important ingredients in the formula that will help you lose your beer gut, but by just concentrating on these to things you will be doomed to failure before you start. The formula for losing a beer gut is a triumvirate, which means that it contains three ingredients. These three ingredients are proper mind set, diet and exercise.

What do I mean by proper mind set? Well, bad diet and lack of exercise are caused by not having the “proper” mind set. Notice I did not say “right” mind set, I said proper mind set. If having a beer gut is something you are comfortable with and you accept it as part of who you are, there is nothing wrong with it. However, if you don’t like having a beer gut and you feel it is not part of who you are, then it not okay.

fat lossGive yourself a mental evaluation. I’ve heard this referred to as a check up from the neck up. Understand what factors led to your having a beer gut and whether or not you are okay with it. If you are not okay with it, understand what you are going to need to do to get rid of it.  Following a proper diet and exercise when you are conditioned to do something different is not an easy thing to do. Accept that you are going to have to cut out some of the habits that you have become accustomed to. Once you have mentally committed to losing your beer gut, you are ready to begin.

A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step. Don’t starve yourself, or exercise to the point of exhaustion when you are just starting out. The change should come gradually. You must learn to walk before you can run.

Cut out high fat content foods like soda pop and potato chips and replace them with juice and vegetables. Meat is an important way that we get protein, so if you eat it, don’t cut it out completely. Just avoid fast food and eat only one portion of meat at lunch and dinner time. Don’t snack after dinner, calories build up while you are sleeping.

For exercise, try doing things like taking the stairs instead of the elevator. Find a physical activity that you enjoy, like walking, bicycling, or hiking. For greater results in losing your beer gut, find an exercise that works your abdominal muscles. Don’t try to do too much at once, but increase your exercise as you become more fit.

Losing a beer gut takes a mental commitment as well as a physical one, and the people who understand this are more likely to succeed.  Cool
